Drs. Fabien and Shashi Baksh
Drs. Fabien and Shashi Baksh graduated from the University of the West Indies in 1990 with their Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees (the British equivalent of MD). Following this they worked in clinical medicine for four years; Dr. F. Baksh focused on hematology/oncology and Dr. S. Baksh on dermatology and endocrinology. Dr. S. Baksh was also recruited to work with the Commonwealth Caribbean Medical Research Council to help conduct epidemiologic research on diabetes and hypertension, in conjunction with King’s College, London. This culminated in several publications.
In 1994, the doctors came to America with their 2 and 5 year old sons to pursue their post graduate studies in pathology. Dr. F. Baksh completed his residency in pathology at Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine, where he was chief resident. Dr. S. Baksh was also a pathology resident in the same program. They both moved to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where Dr. S. Baksh completed her pathology residency followed by a fellowship in dermatopathology. Dr. F. Baksh completed a fellowship in surgical pathology at the University, followed by a fellowship in gastrointestinal pathology. The latter had a strong emphasis in molecular pathology.
During his GI fellowship, Dr. F. Baksh conducted multiple research projects using microdissection-based molecular analysis, resulting in first prize for fellows at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center annual pathology research day in 2000. His research interests include Barrett’s esophagus and detection of Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis in Crohn’s disease, with publications in peer reviewed journals.
Dr. S. Baksh pursued her special interests in the pathogenesis of melanoma and atypical melanocytic lesions, also resulting in publications in peer reviewed journals and in presentations. Their combined molecular research on the clonal evolution of primary and metastatic melanomas won the prestigious United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology Stowell-Orbison Award for pathologists-in-training in 2000 (one of four co-equal winners out of 185 international entries).
After their fellowships they crossed the blue seas to the beautiful country of New Zealand where they honed their skills in their subspecialty areas at the largest commercial laboratory in Auckland. When they returned to the U.S., they worked at Lancaster General Hospital in Pennsylvania for five years, where Dr. F. Baksh was director of histology and Dr. S. Baksh, director of Dermatopathology.
At Pennsylvania Specialty Pathology, Doctors Fabien and Shashi Baksh are also studying the prevalence and persistence of specific subtypes of human papillomavirus in the local population, as detected by molecular analysis of Pap smears.
They are both board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Dr. S. Baksh is also board certified in Dermatopathology. They are fellows and members of a number of nationally and internationally recognized professional societies in general pathology, as well as in their respective subspecialties.
The Doctors reside in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with their four sons, Nikolas, Sanjeethan, Daniel and Dominick.
